Grob's Opening, Symmetrical Variation

[edit | edit source]

Alternatively known as the Double Grob.

1...g5!?

[edit | edit source]

The Symmetrical Variation is a rare response to Grob's Opening (1. g4), due to the fact that it copies White's moves and gets a draw more often instead of capitalising on White's structural disadvantages, and that most players view g4 (g5 for Black) as detrimental due to losing the ability to castle kingside safely. But, this opening may be well-known because of the Coca-Cola Gambit which comes after 2. f4.

This opening has never occured in serious play (as of December 2024).
