[edit | edit source]White transposes into a variant of the French exchange variation with the moves Nc3 and ...Bb4 interposed. Black's best response remains 4...exd5, but 4...Qxd5!? is possible and has been attempted as a way to get the opponent out of theory[1].
Despite being similar to the exchange French, the exchange Winawer is a lot less prone to drawn positions. White usually provokes Bxc3 with a3, leading to an asymmetrical pawn structure after bxc3.
