2...d5 · French Defense: Steiner Variation
[edit | edit source]Black immediately challenges White’s central space. After 3. exd5 exd5 4. cxd5 Qxd5 5. Nc3, the game enters a symmetrical structure where White has a slight lead in development, while Black holds a sturdier pawn center. Alternatively, White can try the aggressive Orthoschnapp Gambit with 3. cxd5 exd5 4. Qb3!?, aiming for quick development and pressure on f7 and d5.
Though less common than 2. d4, the Steiner Variation can lead to sharp and non-standard French positions.
