[edit | edit source]White accepts the gambit.
3...Qxd5?!, recapturing the pawn immediately, allows 4. Nc3 with tempo. Black has to move their queen again and they give White a development lead.
3...e4 is the main move. White's knight is hanging and moving it to 4. Ne5? or 4. Nd4? concedes the initiative to Black after 4...Qxd5!, attacking the knight again. Therefore the only move is 4. Qe2, pinning the pawn. 4...Nf6 5. d3! Qxd5 6. Nbd2 Nc6 7. dxe4±.
3...Bd6 is the Maróczy gambit.
3...Nf6!? transposes into Jobava's gambit in the Petrov defence after 4. Nxe5. An advantage of this approach is that Black can meet either 3. Nxe5 or 3. exd5 in the same way: they transpose after 3...Nf6!? 4. exd5 or 3...Nf6!? 4. Nxe5 respectively.
