Petrov's Defence: Italian Variation
[edit | edit source]Black takes the undefended e4 pawn with 3...Nxe4. Now it would be unwise to continue with 4. Nxe5?! since after 4...d5! Black has a strong grip in the center, and white has to move the bishop to a less desirable location.
Instead white usually follows up with 4. Nc3 which is a gambit line known as the Boden-Kieseritzky Gambit, which resembles the Stafford Gambit with reversed colors, although the extra tempo gained by white with Bc4 does favor White greatly.
