Tayler Opening

[edit | edit source]

3. Be2

[edit | edit source]

The Tayler Opening is a timid and less common response to 2...Nc6. Instead of going for an Italian, Ruy Lopez or Scotch, White chooses a quiet developing move that prepares castling kingside.

Black has multiple responses to this, such as:

  • 3...Nf6, developing the knight and hitting the e4 pawn.
  • 3...Bc5?, developing the bishop to an active square while eyeing f2, but allowing 4. Nxe5!
  • 3...d6, reinforcing e5 even more and opening up the c8 bishop.
  • 3...d5, aggressively attacking the center and opening the c8 bishop.
