[edit | edit source]5. Nxe5? - Legal Trap
[edit | edit source]Legal's trap is named after the French player Sire de Legall, one of the best players of the 1700s. Although 5. Nxe5 is a losing move, as it leaves White's knight hanging, a naive opponent might capture White's queen with 5...Bxd1??. This leads to a mate in 2 for White (6. Bxf7+! Ke7 7. Nd5#).
