[edit | edit source]Black plays 5...f4!, the critical move of the Dubois Variation (named after Serafino Dubois, an 1850s Italian master). Here Black threatens Qxg5. Most often, White will continue to fork Black's queen and rook with 6. Nf7. Otherwise, they will force Black's king to move with 6. Bf7+?, a mistake. White's strongest move here is actually h4! to reinforce their knight and stop Black's queen from moving outwards.
