[edit | edit source]Taking the e5 pawn is a poor move because of the reply 5...Qd4!, forking the knight at e5 and the pawn at e4.
5...Qd4 6. Ng4 Qxe4+ Ne3 and Black gets the pawn back. Any other move for the knight affords Black the opportunity for further damage: 6. Nf3 Qxe4+ 7. Kf1 (7. Qe2 Qxe2+ 8. Kxe2) and White also loses the power to castle.
