[edit | edit source]White takes the apparently free e5-pawn, thereby falling into Black's trap.
Black springs the Mortimer trap with 5...c6, kicking away White's bishop but at the same moment giving their queen access to a5. After 6. Bc4? (or 6. Ba4?) Qa5+! 7. Nc3 Black picks up the knight. Black needs to be aware of a couple of alternative sixth moves for White, but while tricky they are not sound.
Any other fifth move for Black (5...Ng6?, 5...a6?) fails to recover the material.
