Bishop's Opening: Berlin Defence

[edit | edit source]

3. d3

[edit | edit source]

Responding to Black's threat on the e4 pawn, White simultaneously defends it and supports their light-squared bishop. The dark-squared bishop is also opened up for future strategic potential.

Black's most common responses are c6 (the Paulsen defense), intending to strike in the centre with d5 and kick White's bishop, as well as Bc5 and Nc6, which both solidify control over the d4 square.
