In this line, White attempts to directly challenge Black's control of the center with the sacrifice of the pawn on b4. As in the Evans Gambit, after Black's most obvious move 3...Bxb4, White will play 4. c3 with tempo, a move that will eventually allow him to play d4 and get two pawns in the center.
