2. d4
[edit | edit source]Unopposed in the centre, White takes extra space. Black should start to put pressure on White's pawns.
2...Nf6, the main move, directly attacks e4. Since the e-pawn cannot safely advance to e5, White must defend it, usually with 3. Nc3.
2...g6 makes way for ...Bg7, which would attack d4. 3. Nc3 Bg7 transposes into the Modern defence.
2...e5!?, the Maróczy defence, attacks d4 and offers a trade: 3. dxe5 dxe5 4. Qxd8+ Kxd8, where the centre is open, Black has lost castling rights, but the queens are off the board. More usually White plays 3. Nf3 to defend d4 and transpose into a Philidor defence.
