[edit | edit source]

There is no way for black to save their queen now, unless white fails to (re)capture.

Qxb5 allows the knight to recapture, immediately threatening a king-rook fork on the c7 square.

Bd7 aims to compensate, because after 4... Bd7, 5. Bxc6 Bxc6, black immediately threatens to regain some compensation by capturing the g2 pawn and the h1 rook, though this is easily refuted with Nc3.

Nf6 and recapturing with Nxc6 allows black to gain compensation through two tempos, allowing black the initiative, albeit without a queen.
