[edit | edit source]This is a flexible alternative move order in the Caro-Kann, where White has not committed the pawn to d4 yet.
After 2...d5 (near enough the only move, contesting the centre as Black prepared to do on move one), White may still play 3. d4 and transpose into the more common 2. d4 & 3. Nc3 Caro-Kann. However, the plan usually is to play 3. Nf3, the two knights attack. 3. Qf3 is the unusual Goldman variation.
