This move places the knight on a decent square and doesn't allow the pawn push e4-e5 (like in Nf6? e5) temporarily. It also allows e6, Bb4 ideas without Qd4 attacking the b4 bishop and g7 pawn.
White usually goes Nf3 to prepare castling kingside. Castling queenside is usually unsafe for White, s the c-file for both sides is open.
