Offering white the f-pawn, in exchange for exposing white's unprotected g-pawn and cornered rook. White can now play:

  • 4. exf5, accepting the gambit and exposing white's unprotected g-pawn and cornered rook
  • Or, white may decline the gambit by not playing 4. exf5
