[edit | edit source]Black offers the f-pawn hoping to tempt White's e-pawn away, thereby opening the long diagonal controlled by Black's bishop on g7.
This is doubly "hope chess", in that Black hopes White will not play (the best move by engine) 4. d3, but also, in that if White accepts the pawn 4. exf5!? Black is still losing and ...Bxg2 doesn't work anyway: 4. exf5!? Bxg2 5. Qh5+! g6□ 6. fxg6 Bg7 (6...Bxh1?? g7#!) 7. Qg5 Bxh1 8. gxh7 Rxh7 9. Bd3!±.
