White offers Black the trade of knights. After 3...Nxc3 4. dxc3 White has open lines for their pieces to develop, but is unable to support their e5-pawn with their d-pawn.

3...e6, allowing White to trade into Black, and 3...Nb6 have also been tried.

History

This was the line chosen by Friedrich Sämisch [de] (also rendered Saemisch) against Alekhine in the first appearance of the Alekhine defence in 1921.[1]
