Position in Forsyth-Edwards Notation (FEN)
Moves: 1. e4 Nf6 2. e5
ECO code: B02
Parent: Alekhine's defence

2. e5

[edit | edit source]

Black's knight is under attack.

2...Nd5 is the most popular and best move.

2...Ng8?!, the Brooklyn variation, surely does not stand up to scrutiny. Black wants to start the game over, but White has used the tempo to seize the centre and is prepared to develop all their pieces.

2...Ne4?! is called Mokele Mbembe. White is likely to gain more tempo on, or even trap, the knight that has strayed to their side of the board.
