Position in Forsyth-Edwards Notation (FEN)
Moves: 1. e4 Nf6 2. Nc3
ECO code: B02
Parent: Alekhine's defence

2. Nc3!?

[edit | edit source]

White defends e4 while developing a piece. This is solid but less testing than 2. e5.

This allows Black to play 2...e5 and transpose into a Vienna game.

However, if Black thinks White is too eager to avoid the Alekhine's defence then they may avoid transposing with 2...d5, the Scandinavian variation.
