[edit | edit source]White defends e4 while developing a piece. This is solid but less testing than 2. e5.
This allows Black to play 2...e5 and transpose into a Vienna game.
However, if Black thinks White is too eager to avoid the Alekhine's defence then they may avoid transposing with 2...d5, the Scandinavian variation.
