[edit | edit source]White prepares to fianchetto their bishop. White chooses a Catalan-style set up, an approach that combines c4 and d4 with a king's side fianchetto.
This is a less common move order. Black usually develops their knight next, 3...Nf6, and the same Catalan position is reached as if the game had played out in the order 1. d4 Nf6 2. c4 e6 3. g6 d5.
