[edit | edit source]Black intends to fianchetto the dark-squared bishop.
White has the option of transposing into an exchange variation with 5. cxd5. This is quite a popular way to meet the Schlechter at the master level, since 4...g6 isn't a very useful move for Black in the exchange variation.
Apart from that, White can try to develop the dark-squared bishop outside of the pawn-chain with 5. Bf4 or 5. Bg5. More popular, however, is 5. e3, preparing to develop the light-squared bishop and defending c4.
