With 3. Nc3, White develops a piece and continues to fight for the center of the board. On c3, the knight controls the important d5 and e4 squares. Black can choose from four main continuations.

  • 3...Bb4 the Nimzo-Indian Defence, fighting for the center by pinning White's knight.
  • 3...d5 transposing into the Queen's Gambit Declined.
  • 3...c5 transposing into the Modern Benoni.
  • 3...Nc6 transposing into a variation of the Black Knights' Tango.
