English Opening: Anglo-Dutch Defence
[edit | edit source]1...f5
[edit | edit source]Black plays in similar fashion to the Dutch Defence, controlling the e4 pawn with the f-pawn. Named the Anglo-Dutch Defence, this offbeat response to the English Opening mimics 1. d4 f5 and can transpose to it regularly.
White can choose from a variety of responses, such as:
- 2. d4, transposing to the Dutch Defence
- 2. Nc3, developing the queenside knight
- 2. Nf3, developing the kingside knight
- 2. g3, preparing to fianchetto the f1 bishop
- 2. b3, preparing to fianchetto the c1 bishop
- 2. Qc2, attacking the pawn on f5 with the queen
- 2. e4!?, the Hickmann Gambit
- 2. g4!?, the Wade Gambit
