Most analytical engines consider 1. a3? to be at most a wasted move, with it losing around 0.4 points on average. In lieu of this, Black should capitalise on this error, which 1...a6 most certainly does not do. There isn't very much to say regarding this move, just that it is not good. Better replies are 1...e5, 1...d5, 1...Nf6, 1...g6, and 1...c5.
