Position in Forsyth-Edwards Notation (FEN)
Moves: 1. Nc3 d5 2. e4
ECO code: A00
Parent:

2. e4

[edit | edit source]

This move puts White in danger of 2...d4, which will unseat the knight. White usually reroutes it to g3: 2...d4 3. Nce2 e5 4. Ng3.

Defending d5, 2...Nf6, 2...c6, or 2...e6 transposes to the Alekhine, Caro-Kann, or French defences respectively.

Otherwise, 2...dxe4 avoids losing the pawn. 3. Nxe4 completes the trade, or White may gambit it:

  • 3...f3, the Dougherty gambit;
  • 3...d3, the Dunst-Perrenet gambit;
  • 3...Bc4, the Hector gambit.

History

[edit | edit source]

This is the main continuation of the van Geet opening, but may also occur in the Scandinavian defence if 2. Nc3. Chess.com's opening book, but not really anyone else, refers to this as the closed Scandinavian.
